Strategies and Tactics to Attract Candidates to Your Open Jobs

The current labour market is forcing many companies (if not everyone) to use new ways to find people to hire. In my last two articles and videos I covered how to appeal to potential candidates who are looking for a change and how to market what you have to offer people to build their interest in your company.

Even with that people may not be finding your job postings so you need to connect with people that might be shopping around for a new job. Face it, if someone wants a job there are plenty to be had. But people are pickier now because there are more opportunities to change jobs and do something that suits them better or work for a company that has a more appealing culture and management style.

In this article I will focus on finding candidates using Indeed and LinkedIn. Where I live these are the two platforms that seem to work best to search for candidates. The databases on these sites have grown immensely and have elaborate search capability as well as tools to contact candidates and track your conversations. This makes the work easier and more productive.

Indeed, has a subscription service called Find Resumes. It is a paid monthly subscription that you can cancel at any time. They do offer a free trial for new subscribers. It is reasonably priced and is quite effective if used well. You basically enter your search criteria such as job title and geographical location and hit enter. It brings up a list of people and what is great it shows you the last date they updated their resume. This could be a good indicator that they would be interested to explore your job offer.

You can further expand your search by adding more job titles from the recommended list that appears next to your search results. You can even filter by company where they have worked, years of experience and show results by when they last updated their resume. So, if you want to see only resumes that were updated in the last week you can choose that.

LinkedIn offers a similar tool called Recruiter and Recruiter Lite. Recruiter can search all of LinkedIn while the Lite version gives you access to three degrees of connection to you. However, Recruiter is quite expensive and probably affordable to larger companies or those with many jobs to fill.

The search function on LinkedIn is even more comprehensive than on Indeed, but you cannot tell if someone has updated their profile recently. For higher skilled professional jobs, I prefer LinkedIn, but I find Indeed better for mid range jobs. Both systems allow you to create projects and save your candidates to that project.

Once you’ve done a search and found some interesting candidates to contact, both platforms provide a way to send in-mails through their system. Here I suggest personalizing the message to include something about the past work experience or a particular skill and why that makes them a good fit. This will show them you are taking an interest in them and not just using the same template that you send to everyone.

I know some recruiters use social media sites like Facebook to recruit people, but I have not used this method so far. To post a job on Facebook, you need a company page, and you can post the job for free. I recommend this if you have an active Facebook page with people who follow and engage with your posts. I have used groups on Facebook to post freelance jobs for special projects and that has worked very well.

Recruiting has changed because of technology, the pandemic, and the fact that people have had the time to experience working remotely, which has provided needed flexibility. It has also given people the time to reflect on what they really want in a job and explore new options.

Strategies for Attracting Good Employees Part II

In part one of Attracting Good Employees, I covered the current job market and what companies need to do to attract employees who are looking for a better work environment.

Once you have come up with a strategy and action plan to be better positioned as an employer of choice, the next step is to communicate that to potential employees. This requires some good marketing prose and a place for people to find the information.

I suggest creating a recruitment page on your website where candidates and job seekers can learn about working in your company and about the job opportunities you are offering. You can post links to where people can apply for these jobs, whether it is directly on your site or through a job posting on sites like Indeed and LinkedIn.

On the is page you can get creative with content, such as a description of what you offer as a workplace that addresses why people are looking to leave their current job. I listed these five reasons in my last article and video and even have created a worksheet to help you strategize on how to address these issues in your business. These five reasons why people leave their jobs is based on research by Forrester Research and was presented in a webinar by one of the lead researchers.

Many people have been reflecting on what they want in life and work during the current pandemic and are looking to work for companies that reflect their values. So, expressing your values and beliefs and even the story behind the founding of the business is a great way to attract like minded people. Interviews with the owners and directors would enable people to further resonate with the values, beliefs, and the mission of the company.

You can also populate the recruitment page with photos and videos of your business. This is like an about us page but focused more on employee attraction and marketing yourself as an employer of choice. Adding testimonials from employees along with their photos and video clips would further add to the relevance of the page and your objective.

When researching potential employers’ people are looking at all the information available. They will check your presence on the web on sites like Google My Business, Facebook, LinkedIn and Indeed. Make sure to keep these pages up to date and ask employees to leave reviews. Reviews are a powerful resource for job seekers and whoever shops online knows how influential reviews can be in making decisions. In my next article and video, I will cover how to search for ideal candidates rather than relying on job postings that may have a lot of competition. Strategies to Attract Good Employees

The current employment situation is very challenging for employers, but a ripe opportunity for employees. People who are dissatisfied with their job or workplace can easily find jobs they prefer, especially for those with sought after skills.

I covered the reasons why people were leaving their jobs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in a previous article and video. That was based on a webinar I attended called Future of Work Requires a Connected Experience. It was presented by David Johnson a principal analyst with Forrester Research.

According to the research, the five reasons people leave their jobs is:

  1. No feedback
  2. No development opportunities
  3. Feeling unrecognized
  4. Lack of trust
  5. Feeling overworked or burned out

To be attractive to potential candidates who are feeling confident of their job prospects and opportunities, you need to show how you are an organization that values and promotes

  1. Giving feedback
  2. Providing development opportunities
  3. Recognizing good performance
  4. Trustworthiness and integrity
  5. Employee well-being

The five items above are what your organization needs to be doing to keep and attract enough good employees. How well are you doing? Rate yourself on a scale of 1-5, 5 being excellent.

I suggest forming a team to discuss these items and come to consensus on how you score, and what you can do to improve. You may have a lot of solutions you can act on. Start with one that would be most impactful and easiest to implement.

I created a worksheet to help you come up with solutions after discussion with your team. Consider including a few employees in the team to work on this improvement opportunity how to market yourself as an employer of choice because you put into practice those five items that people are looking for.
